De eerste Porsches zijn niet in Duitsland, maar in het Oostenrijkse Gmünd gebouwd. De body’s werden toen handmatig uit aluminiumplaat geklopt. Dit is de Porsche 356 ‘Gmünd’ Coupé. In Oostenrijk werden van 1948 tot 1951 ruim vijftig auto’s gebouwd, waarvan 44 coupés en 8 cabrio’s. Daarna verhuisde de productie naar Stuttgart.
